Google Play requires new personal developer accounts to run a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for 14 days in a row before the app can be published. Beta Family gets you 12 real testers who opt in to your closed test, install your app and stay for all 14 days. We bring in a few extra so a drop-out never breaks the count, and we keep going until you have your 14 days.

How do I get 12 testers for Google Play closed testing?

Where can I find testers for Google Play's 14-day rule?
There are three common ways. Each works; they differ in cost, effort and risk.
| Option | Cost | Effort | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friends and family | Free | You need 12 people with Android phones who opt in, install and keep it for 14 days. | People forget or uninstall, and the 14 days start over. Google may see little real use. |
| Test-for-test groups (Reddit, Discord) | Free, but you test their apps in return | Swap tests with other developers and keep track of who is still in. | Others drop out when their own 14 days are done. Hard to tell who's still opted in. |
| A testing service such as Beta Family | From $49 | Add one Google Group to your closed test. | Check that the testers are real people and what happens if someone leaves. |

Questions
What is Google Play's 12 testers for 14 days rule?
Google Play requires new personal developer accounts to run a closed test with at least 12 testers who have been opted in for at least 14 days in a row. Only then can you apply for production access and publish the app. It applies to personal accounts created after 13 November 2023; organisation accounts are not affected.
Do I have to have 12 testers, or is 12 invitations enough?
Invitations aren't enough. Google counts testers who have opted in to the closed test, and they need to stay opted in for the whole 14 days. That's why we bring in a few extra testers beyond the 12, and replace anyone who leaves.
What happens if a tester leaves during the 14 days?
If the number of opted-in testers drops below 12, the 14 days can start over. We watch the count, remind testers and replace anyone who leaves the same day.
Are the testers real people?
Yes. They are Beta Family testers: people who test apps for companies and write reports about them. They have Android devices, install your app and use it. With the Feedback package, 5 of them also write a full test report.
Do you guarantee that Google approves my app?
We guarantee the testers: we keep going until your closed test has had at least 12 real testers opted in for 14 days in a row, at no extra cost. Google decides on production access, and it also looks at your app and your answers in Play Console. We send you a short guide to those questions.
What does "testers weren't engaged with your app" mean, and what happens then?
Google sometimes declines production access because it thinks the testers didn't really use the app during the 14 days. If that happens after a Production Pass, we run a new 14-day round with fresh testers, free of charge, and keep going until you get there. Send us Google's message under Support within 30 days of your pass ending.
What does the guarantee cover?
We keep going until you have it: if the count falls below 12, we bring in new testers and run until your closed test has had 12 testers for 14 days in a row. If Google says the testers weren't engaged, we run a new 14-day round with fresh testers. Both at no extra cost. Not covered: Google declining for other reasons (such as policy, crashes or your answers), and delays while your closed test isn't approved or isn't available in all countries.
How do I add your testers to my closed test?
We send you a Google Group address (name@googlegroups.com). In Play Console, open your app → Testing → Closed testing → your closed test → Testers, choose Google Groups, paste the address and save. If Play Console won't take the group, you can use an email list instead: your pass page lists the testers' Google accounts to add.
How long does it take?
You get the Google Group right after you pay, usually within a few minutes. Testers usually opt in within a day or two after you've added it, and then the 14 days run. Plan for about 16–17 days from order to applying for production.
Is it allowed to use a testing service for Google Play's 12 testers requirement?
Yes. Google asks you to recruit testers for your closed test and expects them to really use the app. Beta Family provides real, engaged testers and their feedback; we don't sell fake installs. Beta Family isn't affiliated with Google.
